The YMCA of Long Island (YMCA-LI) is joining in the nationwide charitable giving movement, #GivingTuesday, by reminding people of the opportunity to help their local youth. The YMCA-LI’s goal is to raise funds to provide financial assistance to 50 underprivileged families to access to the YMCA-LI’s acclaimed Afterschool Program. The YMCA-LI Afterschool Programs offer a safe space for children to feel accomplished, build new friendships and develop a sense of belonging through sports and homework help.

“Each year, #GivingTuesday is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to be humanitarians and get involved in helping our community by sponsoring the educational needs of children right here on Long Island,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “At each of our branches we have children that wouldn’t have access to a pre-school or before and after school program without the financial resources made possible by our supporters.”

Occurring each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is a movement and day of giving that encourages philanthropy and generosity worldwide. This is the third consecutive year that YMCA-LI has held a specific fundraising initiative on #GivingTuesday.

“I work a full-time job and a part-time job. When I decided to switch careers, childcare became a major concern,” said Julie, a single mother of two children. “I do not have financial support from my family or my children’s father. But the Y provided scholarships for the afterschool program.”

This year, donors can help provide local children with a wide range of programs built on academic intervention, health and enrichment that are proven to have a positive impact on their life at school, at home and in their communities.
