Big Chief Nursery School In Nassau Catches Fire

Everyone was safely evacuated from the building after the fire broke out in the late morning hours.

A nursery school in East Meadow caught fire late Wednesday morning, but everyone was evacuated safely.

Big Chief Nursery School and Camp caught fire around 11:30 a.m. today. The school is located located at 2427 N. Jerusalem Road, right at the intersection with Newbridge Road.

The school has been operating since 1954.

According to Newsday, 158 children, along with counselors, were safely evacuated from the building to St. Raphael's Church down the road from the school. No one was injured.

Big Chief posted on its Facebook page that parents needed pick their children up at the church.

"Today we had a fire at Big Chief," they wrote. "ALL the kids and staff are fine."

More than two dozen parents commented on the post and thanked Big Chief for keeping their children safe.

There's no word yet what caused the fire.
