Conventional Motor Oil vs. Synthetic Motor Oil: Which Should You Put in Your Car?

Know the difference between synthetic and conventional motor oil.

When you finally get around to going to your mechanic for an oil change, they will usually ask you what kind of oil your want- regular or synthetic. A lot of people aren’t sure what is better for their car or just don’t know the difference.

All though it is still up for debate and there is no straight yes/no or right/wrong answer, here are some of the facts that will help you decide which is better for you.

All though in most cases either oil will work fine, if you drive a high performance car or a turbo, it is recommended that you use synthetic. If you have the option of using either here are some things to consider:

-          With conventional oil you will likely need an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles.

-          With synthetic oil you do not need to change your oil as frequently. Some synthetics can even last for over 10,000 miles in your car without being changed.

-          Conventional oil is created using natural petroleum.

-          Synthetic oil is created in a laboratory and because it is dumped less (arguably more environmentally friendly).

-          Synthetic oil can be about twice the price of conventional.

All though most people say that synthetic is better because of its longevity and ability to handle high temperatures better than conventional oil; the choice is still yours and depends on your needs and driving habits.
