Nassau Man Stalked Teens As They Walked Home: Police

Police say he followed them slowly in his car and tried to get them to enter it.

WESTBURY, NY — A Westbury man was arrested yesterday after police say an investigation showed that he had been stalking young girls as they walked home from a nearby school.

According to police, Selvin Ortiz, 46, of 3rd Avenue, followed a 16-year-old girl in his car as she left Park Elementary School at 10:05 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. Police say that the girl was walking on Prospect Avenue at Kinkel Avenue, and Ortiz was slowly following in his car, and gestured for her to get in.

On Thursday, July 11 at 10:18 a.m., police say that Ortiz followed a different girl, also 16, as she left Park Elementary School. Again, police say he followed slowly in his car and gestured for her to get in.

Both girls were in fear for their safety, police say, and called 911. An investigation led police to Ortiz, and hew as placed under arrest at his home.

Ortiz is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree stalking. He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on July 18.
