#60 - Get the Biggest Hero in Town at Tamburino’s Deli

If you’ve got a big appetite, in Cedarhurst is the place for you.

Although its motto is “Best Hero in the Five Towns,” since 1978 it’s been equally known as the biggest hero in town.

This store puts a pound of cold cuts on every hero — literally. The guys behind the counter make sure of it by actually weighing out the meats and cheeses before piling it onto the Italian bread. You might think you have to pay a hefty price for such a hefty sandwich, but the prices are on par with most other delis in the area.

You can have them make one of your favorites or choose one of Tamburino’s specialty heroes. The most popular is the Tamby Special, made with ham capicola, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar. A close second is the Godfather, with grilled roast beef, melted mozzarella and gravy on toasted garlic bread.

Hot sandwiches are also filled with generous heapings of Italian favorites, like chicken parmigiana, sausage, meatballs and eggplant. You can cap it off with one of the deli’s sides, including its signature salad — Tamburino’s Famous Hot Cabbage, which is a spicy cole slaw.

But there’s a lot more to this deli than sandwiches. You can get a hot breakfast, complete entrees, desserts, fresh gourmet pastas and Italian groceries as well.
