Man Arrested After DWI Crash Leaves Many Injured: Police

Police say he drove into a pole, injuring himself and severely injuring two of his passengers.

Nassau police arrested a Queens man early Tuesday morning after he allegedly drove drunk and hit a pole in Cedarhurst, injuring his passengers.

According to police, officers responded to a call at 2:19 a.m. to the intersection of West Broadway and Bayview Avenue for a car crash. A four-door 2016 Nissan Altima with five people inside had struck a pole. One man seated in the back of the car had severe cuts and skull and spine fractures. A man in the passenger seat had spinal fractures. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment. The other two passengers were unharmed.

The driver, Keyon Mayweather, 20, of Shore Front Parkway, Arverne, was arrested. He suffered a possible neck injury and was also taken to the hospital. His car was impounded for brake and safety checks.

Mayweather is charged with driving while intoxicated and two counts of vehicular assault. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
