Nassau Senior Citizen Scammed Out Of Nearly $300,000

Police say the man was a victim of one of many scams that target senior citizens.

A Nassau senior citizen was scammed out of nearly $300,000, and police are seeking the public's help to find the person responsible.

According to police, a 76-year-old Lawrence man received a phone call at 2 p.m. on May 15 from a man claiming to work for the Social Security Administration. The man said there was fraudulent activity under the victim's name and that he was being investigated. The man told the victim that he should transfer all of his money into several different accounts and funds that he provided, and the victim did.

Police say the victim transferred about $296,000. He later found out his money was no longer available and called the police. An investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone with information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous, and you could receive a cash reward if your information leads to an arrest.

Police also urge anyone who receives a call asking they send money to immediately call 911.
