New Businesses: Town Gourmet Moves to Bigger Location

Fruit and goods store relaunches as Sweet Pea.

Popular produce market Town Gourmet recently relocated to a much bigger storefront in Hewlett, offering plenty of new items and a name change to Sweet Pea.

The owners of the market moved from a small attached store on West Broadway to a stand-alone building with a parking lot at 1483 Broadway, which was previously a Greek restaurant. The larger facility will enable the owners to expand on some of the things their customers liked most about the store, including larger salad and sushi bars, and a bigger selection of flowers and Asian specialty foods such as black sesame and green tea ice creams, dumplings and condiments.

Another major addition to the business is a new section created within the store that will offer products from Max’s Appetizing and Kosher Delicatessen, the longstanding Woodmere deli. Also, customers can now buy many items like cheeses and produce in bulk, choose from more than a dozen varieties at the gourmet coffee bean dispenser and put together a hot meal from selections at the new steam table area. A small dining area is also being planned for the near future.

“I worked at both stores,” Malika Juraeva said. “Everything here is even better. It’s all so big and nice and new. We have so much more now — people can get everything they need here.”

But according to Juraeva, one thing that hasn’t changed is the popularity of the store’s fruit, cheese and vegetable platters, as well as the pre-made salads. These continue to be among the store’s biggest sellers.
