Officer Injured As Man Resists Arrest On Long Island: Police

A handgun was found in the vehicle, police say.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — Two men were arrested and charged after a traffic stop that led to the discovery of a handgun and an officer being injured when one man resisted arrest in Valley Stream Saturday night, police said.

According to Nassau County Police, the incident took place at 7:13 p.m. A criminal intelligence rapid response team saw a 2009 gray Honda traveling west on W. Merrick Road with non-transparent window tints, police said.

Officers activated their emergency lights and commenced a traffic stop; the vehicle continued northbound on N. Terrace Place before coming to a stop, police said.

During the investigation, a handgun was recovered from the front passenger side of the vehicle, police said.

The passenger, Kai Williams, 24, of Valley Stream, was arrested without incident and charged with criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

While placing the driver, Shane Nicholas, 23, of Bay Shore, under arrest, Nicholas pushed the officer’s hands away and fled on foot, police said. Nicholas then struck the officer in the head with his elbow and knocked the officer to the pavement, police said. Nicholas continued to flee on foot and entered a random residence, police said.

Nicholas continued to "actively resist" arrest and swung his arm at officers, causing one to strike his head against the wall, police said. Nicholas was then subdued and place under arrest, police said. While arresting Nicholas, an officer suffered injuries to his right knee, head pain, dizziness and an injury to his ribs, police said.

Nicholas was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, third-degree burglary, resisting arrest, and second-degree obstructing governmental administration, police said.

Both men were slated to be arraigned on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
