Phone Scam Victim Out $6,000; Caller Claimed She Owed Amazon: Police
The Woodmere woman was instructed to close out her bank accounts and the money would be picked up at her home, police said.
WOODMERE, NY — A woman was the victim of an elder phone scam in Woodmere. The 71-year-old victim received a call Tuesday evening from someone claiming to work for Amazon and said the woman owed $6,000 on her account, police said.
The person said that her bank accounts were going to be closed and she was told to withdraw money from her accounts before they were closed, authorities said.
She withdrew $50,000 from her accounts and was again contacted by an unknown person. The victim was instructed that someone would come to her house for the money, police said.

A man driving a blue Honda arrived at her residence, took the money and fled. Police are investigating.
The Nassau County Police Department urges the community to be on alert and
to remind vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential scams
or fraud.
