Q&A: Burgers Bar Owner Says Eatery Does Kosher 'Right'

Cedarhurst restaurant serves meaty favorites with a selection of sauces.

owner Mitch Krevat decided to ditch his 25-year career in advertising to create a kosher burger restaurant, a type of eatery he says was nonexistent before he opened up in Cedarhurst five years ago.

Burgers Bar is known for its freshly made-to-order burgers, using beef, lamb, chicken or veggies, which can be topped off with a variety of its homemade gourmet sauces. Krevat recently talked to Patch about his "one-of-a-kind" restaurant.

When I was in advertising, I used to eat in the best restaurants in the world, and there was something about kosher restaurants that just wasn’t right. The food and the service weren’t as good as it should be, and they weren’t that clean. So I decided I was going to change all that and open up my own kosher restaurant.

What makes your place unique?

There’s no other kosher burger joint like this in the world, let alone in the Five Towns. But the best compliment I get is when people come in and say that they don’t come here because it’s kosher. They come here because the food is so good.

Why did you decide to open your store in the Five Towns?

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, but I knew about this area, because back then the Five Towns is where we came to shop. If you wanted the latest and greatest in fashions, you came to Central Avenue. And this community is known for its abundance of kosher restaurants and kosher consumers.

Have you made any changes in the past five years?

We added a couple of new menu items and a couple new sauces. We’re always trying to improve our menu. We also opened a location in Teaneck, N.J.

Anyone walk in asking for a cheeseburger, not realizing the place is kosher?

A lot of people put cheese on a burger, usually because the quality of meat isn’t very good. We make a variety of 15 sauces you can put on that simply compliment our burgers. But they’re so good, you can eat them plain.

Other than burgers, what are some other popular choices?

We have grilled chicken, salads, appetizers and sides.

What is your clientele like?

You can tell what time of day it is by who’s here. During the day we have families. At night we have young teens.

Anything else that makes your restaurant special?

Upstairs we have an outdoor terrace and a party room. We also do catering. And you don’t have to eat here to have a Burger’s Bar experience. We started offering uncooked burgers and our sauces to take home or that can be shipped to anyone. If you have friends and family that you really want to impress, you can send our burgers and sauces to anyone in the world.
