Flushing's Maple Playground To Get $6.5 Million Overhaul

The downtown Flushing playground is getting a major reconstruction, and the public gets to weigh in on what the new park should be like.

FLUSHING, QUEENS — Maple Playground is getting a multimillion-dollar renovation.

The NYC Parks Department will redo the Downtown Flushing playground, which has faced problems with outdated equipment, drainage and sanitation.

City Council Member Peter Koo and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz joined forces to fund the $6.5 million reconstruction, which had been on the park’s departments capital project wishlist.

Koo, who represents Downtown Flushing, is hosting a public meeting Thursday evening at P.S. 244Q to collect public feedback on how to best redo the park, located at 136-50 Maple Ave.

“As our community continues to grow, it is more important than ever that we maintain and upgrade our neighborhood playgrounds to ensure they are safe and enjoyable places for everyone,” Koo told Patch in a statement.

“Maple Playground is a flagship park and playground in the heart of downtown Flushing that has been in dire need of a number of repairs for many years,” he added.

Koo set aside $3.5 million in capital funds for the renovation and Katz put in $3 million, according to a spokesman for Koo.

The Maple Playground public meeting is Thursday, May 23 at 5:30 p.m. at P.S. 244Q in Flushing. Attendees may RSVP for the public meeting by emailing corisa.robinson@parks.nyc.gov.
