Quilts can link to a family’s heritage; symbolize the union and expression of different cultures, bonds of love, comfort and commitment. They are the medium for storytelling stitched into every segment. As part of the SPARC (Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide) program, we are collaborating with senior citizens on a mixed media visual arts project: “The Soul Quilt.” Each participating member creates an individual "quilt" piece working in the medium of his or her choice, reflecting on a theme that resonates for them. All the final pieces will be assembled at SNAP ISC of Eastern Queens into one "Soul Quilt" in a poignant ceremony that is FREE and open to the public.
Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide (SPARC) is a community arts engagement program that places artists‐in‐residence at senior centers across the five boroughs of New York City. SPARC is a collaboration among the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department for the Aging and five of the City's local arts councils. The program was developed in 2009 as part of the Mayor’s Age‐Friendly NYC initiative, and is supported, in part, by funding from the Department for the Aging.
