CORRECTION: Body Pulled From Nassau Canal Was Not Murder Victim

Police are investigating the cause of death of the 77-year-old man who was found Friday morning.

A body was pulled from the water in Freeport Friday morning, but police are not investigating it as a possible homicide, despite an early report they said they were.

According to police, a call was placed to Freeport police at 7:40 a.m. for a body in the water of a canal near South Main Street. Police arrived and pulled the man, Hernan Ocampo, Loaiza, 77, of Freeport, from the water. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors.

Police say the cause of death is undetermined, and that the investigation is ongoing.

Police ask anyone with information about Loaiza's death to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.
