
Tweens N’ Teens Movie Night/ Scavenger Hunt: Kick off the “You Are Here” Summer Reading Club with an evening of fun on June 27 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. YAs are invited to join their friends and see the movie National Treasure, starring Nicholas Cage. Enjoy refreshments and participate in a “treasure hunt” by going on a scavenger hunt in the library. Registration began June 13 on Eventkeeper. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own Library card to register.
Everyone entering or in middle school or high school is invited to travel the universe via You Are Here, the Summer Reading Club for Young Adults at the Garden City Public Library. Registration starts June 13 and continues throughout July. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Club is Travel.
Vintage Inspired Travel Journals Workshop: Doris Benter will guide YAs in the creation of travel journals on June 29 from 7-8 p.m. Cut and arrange vintage, themed travel images before using decoupage to adhere them onto journal covers. Make a personal record of the places you visit while “You Are Here.” Registration is limited to 20 YAs and began June 15 on Eventkeeper. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own library card to register.

YAK & SNACK: “Let’s Get Graphic”: Explore graphic novels and talk about your favorites: Batman, Twilight Zone, manga, comic books and more on July 6 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. YA Librarian Marge Kelly will present the Top 10 Graphic Novels for 2011. Refreshments will be served. Registration is limited to 25 YAs and began June 8 on Eventkeeper. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own library card to register.
Aboriginal Boomerangs of Australia: Teens will have fun painting their own Aboriginal Boomerangs from Australia with Samantha Sayet, certified art teacher, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. Registration begins June 29 on Eventkeeper and is limited to 25 YAs. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own library card to register.

Lunch@ The Library: Come and cool off! Bring your brown bag lunch and enjoy lunch, games and crafts with your friends at the library on July 7, 14, 21, and 28 at noon. Beverages, snacks and desserts will be served courtesy of the YA department and The Friends of the Garden City Public Library. No registration is required.
- On July 7, come play charades, trivia games and other group games.
- On July 14 bring old postcards and create a hanging banner to display them.
- On July 21, play Library Minute to Win It, based on the NBC-TV game show.
- On July 28, library pages will assist with making bracelets from Central America and masks of African origin.
Young Adult 2011 Summer Reading Club: Join the Summer Reading Club by signing up at the YA desk or filling out an online registration by visiting the website www.gardencitypl.org and click on Young Adults. All registrants get a signing bonus prize bag. Read anything of your choosing: a summer assignment book, a recreational book, a comic book, newspaper, magazine or eBook. You can also listen to an audiobook or Playaway. Fill out a mini-review form and hand it in for a raffle prize. Reviews can be done on paper and put in the raffle box in the Tweens N’ Teens Room or emailed to mkelly@gardencitypl.org and a print out will be placed in the raffle box for you. Win cool prizes!
Whether you travel near or far this summer, send a postcard to the YA department at the library. Postcards will be displayed. Your imagination can take you on a journey as well. Travel to another world through reading, create a postcard about that journey and send it in to the library! Keep a reading diary and show it to the Young Adult Librarian before Aug. 12. This will make you eligible to receive an invitation for the Back-to-School Bash without entering the weekly raffles. This year’s Back-to-School Bash will be held Aug. 31. There will be a pizza party with a talent show and games, door prizes and auctions, and certificates of achievement.
If you are away all summer, you may still join and participate in the You Are Here Summer Reading Club. Summer Program Information: More information about the many special summer programs for YAs will be provided in the coming weeks. In addition, you can pick up flyers for all of the programs in the YA Room or check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming summer events and registration dates. Registration can be done through Eventkeeper or the Calendar of Events on the library’s website. All teens and ‘tweens must have their own library card to register for programs. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority registration is given to Young Adults, who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
