LI Judge Ignored State's Bail Law During Hearing
Reports say the judge ordered a defendant held on bail, ignoring the state's controversial new law.
A Long Island judge made waves this week when he ignored the state's new bail law and ordered a suspect held on bail.
According to the New York Post, Nassau County District Court Judge David McAndrews ordered Romell Nellis — who was accused of robbing two banks — held on $10,000 bail. However, under New York's new bail law, Nellis should have been released.
“I don’t want you walking around my neighborhood,” McAndrews said, according to the Post.

However, McAndrews' decision was quickly overturned by a higher court, the Post reported, and Nellis was released without bail.

Nellis was arrested by Nassau County Police on Jan. 8 and accused of robbing two banks. He was charged with two counts of third-degree robbery, which is not a bailable offense under the state's new law.
