Nassau Woman Charged With 2 Brutal Assaults: Police

Police say she attacked a woman in front of her young children and also stabbed a man.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — A Hempstead woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say an investigation found that she was responsible for two assaults, one of which dated back to 2019.

According to police, the first assault happened on May 18, 2019 at 1:20 p.m. inside the apartment building at 590 Fulton Ave. Police say Fanny Oviedo-Canales, 38, followed a 28-year-old woman into a stairwell of the building and attacked her. Police say she punched the woman in the face and scratched her face while being verbally abusive. She then grabbed the woman's neck and started to choke her, police said, and slammed her head into the wall. Police say the woman's three young children were all present during the attack.

The second assault occurred on Oct. 4 2020 in front of 400 B Fulton Ave. at 11:30 p.m., police said. According to police, Oviedo-Canales stabbed a 36-year-old man in the chest. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police say an investigation identified Oviedo-Canales as the person behind the two assaults. With the assistance of the Hempstead Police Department, she was arrested at her apartment on Jerusalem Avenue.

Oviedo-Canales is charged with first-, second- and third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. She is scheduled to be arraigned later today.
