Glen Cove Seeks Perfect Christmas Tree for 100th Tree of Light Celebration

Will your tree make the cut?

The City of Glen Cove is looking for the perfect Christmas tree to be used in the 100th Anniversary of Glen Cove’s Tree of Light celebration.

Residents who would like to donate a tree for the Nov. 28 festivities have a chance to receive special recognition at the celebration.

The City wants an evergreen, spruce, fir or pine tree. “We are looking for a fully symmetrical tree that is approximately 25 to 30 feet tall and easily accessible for removal.” said Jim Byrne, director of Glen Cove’s Department of Public Works.

Glen Cove’s DPW will handle the final selection, harvesting, removal and delivery of the holiday tree to Downtown Glen Cove for free.

“Our City’s outdoor holiday tree tradition began in 1915 when the first tree was erected at Highland Road and School Street (the former home of the Glen Cove Neighborhood Association) and strung with electric lights,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “History tells us that it took three days to wire the tree with lights and that the electricity to light the tree was donated by Glen Cove Light and Power Company.”

The celebration is sponsored by the Glen Cove Business Improvement District.
