Hundreds of Residents Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) in Glen Cove
Local participate in S.T.O.P. collection to end pollution of harmful waste in the community.

More than 350 residents properly disposed of their hazardous waste household items at Glen Cove DPW’s recent bi-annual S.T.O.P. Program.
“Awareness and cooperation are the keys to keeping hazardous materials out of our waste stream,” Mayor Reggie Spinello said in a press release. “We appreciate the support of our residents who took the time to participate in this program as every item turned in at our S.T.O.P. collection represents less harmful waste in our communities.”
The event was held Saturday, Sept. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Department of Public Works Yard, located on 100 Morris Ave.

S.T.O.P., which stands for Stop Throwing Out Pollutants, is a program that provides a safe and environmentally-friendly way to dispose of various hazardous household items, including:
- Old paint
- Enamel
- Oil and lead-based paints only (no water or latex based paints)
- Paint thinner
- Household batteries (no rechargeable batteries)
- Brake and transmission fluid
- Antifreeze
- Aerosol cans with contents
- Air conditioning refrigerants
- Pesticides
- Insecticides
- Fertilizers
- Oven cleaner
- Fug cleaner
- Polish and wood preservatives
- Pool chemicals
- Propane tanks with contents
- Unused flammable liquids
- Fluorescent light bulbs
Items that are not eligible include: water and latex based paints, electronics, car batteries, rechargeable batteries, motor oil, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fireworks, empty aerosol cans, light bulbs that are not fluorescent, explosives and medical waste.

The S.T.O.P. event is supported by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Winters Bros. Waste Systems and MXI Environmental Services.
