So the holiday is here and the weather forecast is crummy. There is still one thing that you need to do to protect your dog. It is simple, it is short, it is really important. There is a common object that will be lurking in our kitchens and yards this kickoff to the barbecue season. Two words that strike fear into ER veterinarians and surgeons alike - CORN COBS. That's right. Do not let your pet get into the garbage and eat a corn cob. Even worse, do not feed your pet corn on the cob. These suckers get swallowed in chunks, pass out of the stomach and lodge in the small intestines. They do a ton of damage and the only way to get them out is surgery. Risky, surgery. Surgery with many potential complications. So by all means, enjoy your food. Stay dry. Sit by the pool, play golf, go for a run (maybe I'll see you at the Long Beach 10 Miler on Sunday). But please, do not let your dog get into corn cobs. (avoid spare rib bones too but that can be a 4th of July rant.)
