June welcomes Y members and their dad’s for a month-long celebration of men’s health, as well as a week-long celebration of Father’s Day. All month long, the Y will offer tips on men’s health and well-being. Between Sunday, June 9th– Sunday, June 16th the Y invites fathers to participate in activities and to use our fitness centers, classes, gymnasiums and pools. “The essence of what the YMCA is all about is nurturing family connections,” says President & CEO Anne N. Brigis. “We are proud to engage our Y family in this historic celebration honoring fathers.” All members are encouraged to bring their dads in for some family bonding, enriching learning opportunities and exercise! Participating facilities include the YMCA at Glen Cove, Huntington YMCA, Great South Bay YMCA, Patchogue Family YMCA, Brookhaven Roe YMCA and the YMCA East Hampton ReCenter. A History of Father’s Day: DID YOU KNOW: The YMCA invented Father’s Day in 1910! During Mother’s Day Mass in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd thought up the idea to honor fathers. With help from the YMCA in Spokane, Washington, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. This holiday was acknowledged by several Presidents including Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Lyndon Johnson. In 1972, Richard Nixon established Father’s Day to be a permanent national observance day on the third Sunday of June.
