Melville Fire Department Rescues Driver in Northern State Crash
Firefighters used the "Jaws of Life" to rescue the driver trapped in the wreckage on Thursday.

The Melville Fire Department rescued a driver who was critically injured in a Northern State Parkway crash on Thursday, April 2.
The vehicle went off the road and slammed into a tree, shearing it off. The driver was trapped in the wreckage and firefighters used chainsaws to cut trees to rescue him, according to fire officials.

The vehicle crashed in the parkway’s westbound lanes, west of Route 110 around 10:50 a.m.
Firefighters used the ”Jaws of Life” to remove the two driver’s side doors to extricate the trapped driver, fire officials said.

About 15 firefighters and rescue personnel were on the scene with an ambulance, two heavy rescue trucks and a paramedic responder unit. The responders were under the command of Second Assistant Chief Paul Mahler.
