Firefighters Save Elderly Man From Dix Hills House Fire

The Dix Hills Fire Department rescued and revived an elderly man who was trapped inside a house fire in Dix Hills Saturday around 11:25 p.m.

Firefighters found the man outside the bedroom and pulled him to safety. The man was in cardiac arrest and was revived by Dix Hills Rescue Squad EMS personnel. EMS administered CPR and a cyanide antidote kit to reverse the effects of smoke inhalation, according to fire officials. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

One Dix Hills firefighter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Another firefighter suffered a hand laceration battling the blaze and was transported to Huntington Hospital, authorities said.

There were about 70 firefighters and rescue personnel on the scene with nine trucks and four ambulances.

The fire was under control in about 40 minutes, fire officials said.

The responders were under the command of Chief Robert Fling, with operations support by assistant chiefs Tom Napolitano and Joe Williamson.

The Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire, authorities said.

The Dix Hills Fire Department received assistance from the Deer Park, Greenlawn, Huntington Manor, Melville, Commack and North Babylon fire departments, and the Brentwood Legion and Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps.

This is the eighth working house fire that the Dix Hills Fire Department has responded to this year. The most recent fire took place on Tuesday, March 31.
