Man, 28, Shot And Killed In Broad Daylight In Harlem

A man was shot in broad daylight just south of 125th Street in Central Harlem on Tuesday. He was pronounced dead an hour later.

HARLEM, NY — A 28-year-old man was fatally shot in broad daylight at 3 p.m. Tuesday, on Malcolm X Boulevard just south of 125th Street in Central Harlem.

Minutes after the shooting, paramedics dragged the man from the passenger door of a white Ford van parked in front of a Wells Fargo bank on Malcolm X Boulevard, across the street from Whole Foods. For several minutes, paramedics performed chest compressions on the man as he lay on the sidewalk and a crowd formed nearby.

The man, who was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, appeared lifeless as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance. Suffering from one gunshot wound to the neck, he was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m., police said. His name has not been released.

Police were searching for a suspect, described as a Black man wearing a black shirt with white lettering on it, who they say fled south on foot toward 124th Street before getting into a BMW.

At the scene, witness Idris Bandy told Patch he was exiting the subway station at the end of the block when he heard three shots, sending people running. Within minutes, police cars arrived and officers taped off the area around the van.

Harlem has struggled with a rise in gun violence this summer, prompting Mayor Bill de Blasio to launch an initiative aiming to increase police presence in the neighborhood and engage community and faith groups as violence interrupters.
