Morningside Heights 'Closet' Listed As $750 A Month Studio

The tiny apartment boasts "a large window" in an area that's "very safe and gentrifying rapidly."

MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, NY — The New York real estate market never fails to amaze. What appears to be a "closet" in the back of a Morningside Heights brownstone is being advertised on Craigslist as a $750 per month studio apartment.

The "studio," located on West 117th street, appears to be targeted toward college students looking to venture off campus. The listing, which was posted to Craigsliston Friday, notes the apartment's close proximity to Columbia University and makes multiple comparisons between it and a dorm room.

No specifications were given, but photos attached to the listing show an empty room with a window, power strip and two shelves attached to one of the walls. The listing notes that the closet has a loft installed, so a bed won't take up the entirety of the room. Like a dorm, tenants will share a bathroom with three other building tenants.

The listing drew derision online.

"That's a closet. They're renting a closet," said Reddit commenter Fontanella404.

Another joked: "You'd have to evict the young wizard in residence there first," referencing Harry Potter who lived in a closet under the stairs.

The listing notes that the studio is located in an area that's "very safe and gentrifying rapidly." In fact, it's only a block away from the nearest Starbucks.

But hey, if you can tolerate a lack of space and sharing a bathroom, $750 with utilities included isn't too shabby as far as Manhattan rents go. Unfortunately prospective tenants won't be able to cut costs on food as the unit does not come with a kitchen.

The listing had been taken shortly after the Redditors got hold of it, but an open house was planned for Monday afternoon.

"Showing today, Monday from 3-6 p.m. They'll have an occupant by 4pm," said Fontanella4o4.
