Skimming Devices Found at NEFCU ATMs in Nassau County

Skimming devices at three NEFCU branches in Nassau County were discovered over the weekend, the credit union told Patch Wednesday.

The skimming devices were attached to ATMs during non-business hours for short periods of time at the New Hyde Park, Franklin Square and Wantagh branches, NEFCU said in a statement.

Information gathered from the skimming devices was used to make fraudulent purchases in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan over the weekend.

Nassau County Police said they are working with NEFCU to identify those responsible for this crime.

Long Island has seen an increase in ATM skimming fraud in the recent months, but this incident is the first time that NEFCU systems have been breached, the credit union said.

“We are taking immediate steps to isolate the impacted cards and are proactively taking action to stop further fraud from occurring,” NEFCU said in a statement. “We encourage members who have used those ATMs to verify recent transactions. If there is suspicion of fraud, we ask that they notify us immediately.”

The credit union recommends that customers regularly check their accounts and inform their bank of any unusual activity.
