Long Island Biennial

Huntington, NY – The Heckscher Museum of Art presents the exhibition Long Island Biennial, opening Saturday, September 3, 2016. The Biennial is a juried competition that occurs every other year to showcase the work of professional, contemporary artists working in Suffolk and Nassau Counties.

This is the fourth Long Island Biennial organized by the Museum. A record 336 entries were received from artists this year. Fifty-four works of art were selected by jurors Lori Bookstein, Lori Bookstein Fine Art, New York City; Seung Lee, Professor of Art, and Director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies, LIU Post; and Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director and Chief Curator, Guild Hall, East Hampton.

About the juried competition, Seung Lee remarks, “… it was wonderful to see that so many talented artists are in our midst. It was also one of the most challenging judging assignments that I've done given the quality of artwork and my professional familiarity with many of the artists. I was furthermore impressed by the level of professionalism displayed by the other judges - objectivity remained a goal.”

Five artists were honored with awards of merit: Monica Banks (East Hampton) whose Hymn is constructed of glazed English porcelain; Philippe Cheng (Bridgehampton) for an untitled photograph; Lisa Federici (Wantagh) whose Quilted Heart is constructed of recycled sari ribbons and thread; Jeanette Martone (Bay Shore) for a pen and ink drawing titled On the Border; and Jeff Muhs (Southampton) for Charting Totality, oil on canvas.

Executive Director Michael Schantz noted that the Long Island Biennial is a terrific opportunity for people to discover a broad range of work by emerging and established artists residing in communities throughout the Island.

Long Island Biennial Gallery Talk on Friday, October 28, from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm is designed to promote dialogue between exhibiting Biennial artists and the community. Biennial artists will discuss their creative process and artistic journey, followed by a Meet and Greet.

Looking Out, Looking In: Windows in Art. Whether casting light that illuminates a scene or providing formal structure to a composition, windows signify a boundary between private and public spaces. Drawn from the Museum’s collection, Looking Out, Looking In explores windows in paintings and photographs of the 19th and 20th centuries by artists such as Berenice Abbott, Don Eddy, Fairfield Porter, Emilio Sanchez, John Sloan, and Helen Miranda Wilson. Looking Out, Looking In: Windows in Art remains on view through November 27, 2016.

Synapses: Threads for Thought presents over two dozen works from the Museum’s collection as a thread of diverse connections. Paintings, prints, and photographs are arranged so that each work links to those that precede and follow it. Works range from a late 16th- century Annunciation and George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun to abstractions by Arthur Dove and photographs by Larry Fink. Synapses: Threads for Thought remains on view through April 9, 2017.
