Heckscher Museum Celebrates 150th Anniversary of the End of Civil War

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) recognizes the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the American Civil War.

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) and fellow local legislators recently recognized the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the American Civil War by visiting the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. At the event, they viewed the unveiling of longtime artist Mort Künstler’s latest piece, “Respect of an Army.”

“The Heckscher Museum of Arts holds some of the finest paintings in the state, and we are fortunate to live in a community that truly appreciates the significance of the arts. I believe that societies are remembered by their preservations of the arts; it’s important that we continue to make art a staple point in our community,” said Lupinacci.

Mort Künstler’s “Respect of an Army” piece portrays Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee surrendering to Union soldiers in 1865. The painting is located in the Power Politics and War Exhibit at the Heckscher Museum of Arts. Künstler also announced his most recent works, titled “A New Nation,” which depict American Revolutionary War scenes, will be unveiled in 2016.
