The Schlitt Law Firm Gets Involved in Special Olympics Basketball

With 1 of our colleagues playing Special Olympics basketball & 2 collegues coaching, we're cheering hard for Special Olympics hoops

Yes, we’re heading into final four weekend, but around the Schlitt Law Firm another basketball program has our attention. Our mail clerk, John Lee Cronin, plays Special Olympic basketball (among other sports) and two of our colleagues, Cayla Calderwood and James Cronin, have joined John by coaching in the program. Their team recently captured a silver medal at a Special Olympics Tournament at Hofstra.

John attends a joint program at Huntington High School and Wilson Tech and comes to the Schlitt Law office after school. He helps out around the office, does the shredding and, most importantly, takes the mail and packages to the Post Office. Everyone at the Huntington Post Office knows John and they love to see him. You may have seen him around Huntington Village running errands around town and makes some local deliveries.

James, who is a part-time clerk in the office, and Cayla, one of Our Legal Analysts, coach in the Monday night program run by the Commack Sharks. Working with 20 to 30 special needs athletes, they put the players through warm up exercises and drills before running controlled scrimmages. Cayla explains, “Monday night is the best night of my week. It is pure joy to watch a player make a shot and jump up and down like she won an NBA Final.” James adds, “People might see it as I’m giving to them, but mostly I’m get more from these athletes than I could ever give them.” In fact, Cayla and James enjoy it so much that they are both now helping coach in the track and field program.

As for John, he never takes time off from his Special Olympics competitions. He has attended the State games for soccer, track and snow showing and has won numerous medals. John participates in many other Special Olympics sports with the Commack Sharks, the Huntington Boys Club soccer program and the Huntington High School Special Olympics Program led by Coach Linda Roth. In fact, Coach Roth’s Blue Devil Snowshoeing Team has earned international renowned and has been featured in many newsprint and televised news stories.

Here at the Schlitt Law Firm, we make a commitment to give back and contribute to our community. We donate money as a firm to local education and children’s charities and match the contributions made by our employees. But it is more than money. We give people time off for volunteer activities and participate as an organization in many local charitable activities. We are active supports of the Tri-Community Youth Agency (Tri-CYA) and sponsor a team and walk each year in the Huntington High School Relay for Life. That’s just part of who we are. We applaud John’s competitiveness and we’re glad to work with people like Cayla and James who give so much of themselves.
