Bowling Teams Cruise to Easy Wins

Mamaroneck's boys and girls varsity bowling teams won in convincing fashion Tuesday.

The Mamaroneck boys and girls varsity bowling teams swept their competition away Tuesday night in White Plains.  The boys defeated Tuckahoe, while the girls defeated Port Chester B. Each score was 7-0.

"It's great, absolutely," said Head Coach Bill Byron.  "They have both been playing really well lately."

On the boys side, Brendan Schmitt got things rolling with three consecutive strikes in the first game on his way to scoring a 158. He would finish his three games with a total of 519 pins.

Tuckahoe was never able to keep the game close against the Mamaroneck boys.  The margin of victory was over 100 total pins in each of the three games of the night.  But for a young Tuckahoe team, the night was a good learning experience.

"We haven't won a game yet, but they're enjoying it and having a good time," said Tuckahoe coach Kristin Love.  "As long as they're improving, I am happy."

The lopsided Mamaroneck victory was by no means a surprise. The Tuckahoe team is comprised completely of sophomores and freshman after losing almost all of their varsity experience last year to graduation.  Mamaroneck, on the other hand, is competing to qualify for sections.

"Gradually, we are getting better," said Tuckahoe freshman James Baker.  "All of our players improved today."

Love added that a handful of other coaches have commended her on the improvement her team has made throughout the season.  But that wasn't enough to keep the game close on this night, as Mamaroneck coasted to the victory.

Meanwhile, in the girls match, Sarah Fedorchick rebounded from a slow start to help bowl the Mamaroneck girls to another victory.

"It was slipping out of my hand a little bit in the beginning," said Fedorchick.  "The second game was good; I started to get a feel for the lanes."

Fedorchick finished with a three game pin total of 449, edging teammate Dana Ortega for the girls game team high.  The girls won all three games against Port Chester B, knocking down 250 more total pins during the overall matchup.

"We had beaten them before, so it was kind of what we expected," said Fedorchick of the relatively easy victory.

With the season quickly coming to a close, the Mamaroneck boys team is holding on to the outside chance that they could qualify for sections as a team.  Also, according to Byron, two boys and one girl are expected to move on to individual post-season play with the chance of a third boy, depending on how the remainder of the season plays out.
