'Can Menorah' Celebrates Hanukkah, Benefits Food Bank

A public menorah lighting took place Sunday in Mamaroneck, hosted by Chabad of Larchmont and Mamaroneck.

The unique aspect of the lighting was that it was the first-ever "Can Menorah," built entirely out of cans of food.

With the convergence of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving, this season was dubbed the Hanukkah of Giving.

The cans—totaling about 1,000, some of which were donated by Stop and Shop and the others by the public—were stacked to build the menorah. Candles were placed on top and the menorah was lit by Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Norman Rosenblum.

The cans will be donated to the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force.

Rabbi Mendel Silberstein said that Hanukkah teaches people that light dispels darkness.

"There's no better way of spreading light than giving food to those in need," he said. "In this way, we will be including hundreds of people less fortunate than ourselves in our festival of lights. We are very excited and proud of this effort."
