Larchmont’s Jackson Named Rookie of the Week

Mamaroneck High School (MHS) alum and Nichols College freshman Brett Jackson was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week after he went 8-15 for a batting average of .533 over the last week. He also scored nine runs, stole five bases and knocked in three runs during the week.

Jackson is currently hitting .400 on the season with 12 runs scored.

Nichols College currently stands at 8-19 and they will return to the field at home against WPI today at 4 p.m.

Sport: Girls Lacrosse

Game: Mamaroneck vs. Scarsdale

Score: Mamaroneck won 14-12

Highlights: Abby Baigelman scored five goals and assisted on two others for Mamaroneck in the win. Jessica Gardiner and Jessica Corbin each scored two goals for the Tigers. Lindsay Repp scored four times and picked up an assist for Scarsdale in the loss.

Sport: Golf

Game: Mamaroneck vs. Carmel

Score: Carmel Won 213-240

Highlights: Carmel finished in the top three spots and Jackie Barnes led the way with 38 in the par 35 at Quaker Ridge. Maggie Sullivan led Mamaroneck with a 45.

Sport: Golf

Game: Rye Neck vs. Valhalla

Score: Rye Neck 218-289

Highlights: Ryan Morningstar was medalist with a 41 while Luke Murphy had a 42. Whitney Spiegel had her lowest round of the year with a 42 and her twin brother Michael added a 45. Rye Neck improved it's record to 7-2 and plays Ossining on Thursday.

Roemer, Lombardi power Pace

Chris Roemer of Ardsley raised his average to .307 with a double, and Joe Lombardi of Briarcliff belted an RBI triple as the Pace University baseball team raised its record to an impressive 23-16 and 13-8 in the Northeast-10 with a 5-3 win over visiting Assumption College.

Roemer is second in batting for the Setters, and second in RBI with 22.

Junior Eddie Byrne of Yonkers tossed a scoreless inning in relief to improve to 4-3 after Brandon Martineson of Warwick blasted a two-run homer in the last of the ninth inning.

The Setters, who are in first place in the NE-10 Southwest Division with an 11-2 mark, host the University of New Haven in a division game on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Finnerty Field in Pleasantville.

The Greyhounds of Assumption fell to 11-22-1 overall, 5-12-1 in the NE-10 and 4-9 in division play.

Mortarboard musings

• The Manhattan College softball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Iona College, the two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion. The Jaspers (6-29, 1-7 MAAC) were able to muster just four hits in the two games, as the Gaels (25-20, 7-3 MAAC) posted 7-0 and 3-1 wins at Gaelic Park in Riverdale. Iona pitcher Sarah Jackson of Citrus Heights, CA, the MAAC preseason player of the year, no-hit the Jaspers through six innings in the first game before Amanda Babcock of Haverstraw ripped a clean single to right leading off the bottom of the seventh. Jackson (12-9) allowed just two base runners, Babcock’s single and a walk to Jen Keller of Woodridge, NJ, in the second inning. Babcock is batting .256, second-best on the team. Manhattan meets Fairleigh Dickinson today in Teaneck, NJ, for a twin-bill at 3 p.m. Iona College hosts Rutgers today in New Rochelle at 2:30 for a doubleheader.
• Manhattan College freshman pitcher Michael Scarinci of Nanuet earned his second MAAC rookie of the week award, becoming the only player to be a repeat winner this season. Scarinci, an alum of Pearl River High School, delivered a two-hitter on Sunday that helped lift Manhattan to a 7-0 victory at Canisius and clinch the MAAC series. Scarinci carried a perfect game into the sixth inning as he sat down 15 batters in order. He finished with four strikeouts en route to his first career shutout. Scarinci faced the minimum 21 batters and did not allow the Golden Griffs to reach second base. Two infield singles in the sixth and seventh innings were the only blemish on his stat line. The right hander from Nanuet, N.Y. forced Canisius into 13 ground outs, two double plays and he did not walk a batter. With the win, Scarinci improved to 3-1 in MAAC contests. Manhattan returns to action on Wednesday when the Jaspers visit Albany for a 3:30 p.m. contest. The Jaspers continue the road series this weekend when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a four game set at TCU. The Jaspers and Horned Frogs will kick off the series on Friday at 7:30 p.m. eastern.
• Manhattanville senior tennis player Michael Capozzi was named the Middle Atlantic Men’s Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year.
