As all the local athletes finish up their turkey leftovers, winter sports are quietly beginning around the area. The hockey and bowling seasons have already started while other sports will be spending the next week fine tuning their rosters in scrimmages and final preseason practices.
One of the local teams that people are most excited for is the Mamaroneck boy’s basketball squad, after last season’s 11-9 finish the team gained experience and are looking to make some noise this year. Recently Patch caught up with Head Coach Tyrone Carver to preview this year’s team.

“The core of this year’s team has plenty of big game experience. It will be important for them to carry the load early in the season as our new additions get quickly acclimated to the varsity level.”
What were some of the weaknesses your team had last year that you hope to improve upon this season?
“We had a great season last year; unfortunately a few things didn’t go our way. I feel this year’s core will help with their experience and our newcomers are more prepared to make a huge impact early in the season.”
Who are some of your returning players coming back who you see being big contributors?
“Three year starter, captain, and all section player Matt Mezansky, two year starter Alex Lanni manning the paint, and Gerry McMullin should be huge forces this year.”
Who are some of your new players you are expecting to thrust into a larger role on the team?
“Junior guard Ryan Orgielewicz and Junior Forward Ryan Cadden are expected to come in and have a huge impact on the season.”
How has the team been preparing in the off-season?
“This team has worked extremely hard in the off-season by attending workout sessions twice a week, we attended two team camps during the summer, and had a strong fall season with workouts three times a week and participating in a fall league on Sundays.”
What are your goals for the season as a team?
“Our goal is very simple, we want to make the playoffs and advance and be one of the four teams playing at the County Center come February.”
Are there one or two games circled on the schedule this season?
“We never overlook any of our opponents. Each game is very important. However we are very excited to have the opportunity to play at the Westchester County Center on Dec. 28 in the Slam Dunk Challenge vs. Brewster. One of hopefully two trips to the County Center. We are also excited about traveling to play Section 4 champions Union-Endicott on Jan. 21. Being a part of the toughest league in New York State is always a challenge, however, I am eager to see where this team will end up.”
What are you personally looking forward to this season?
I’m personally looking forward to seeing our team play. We have excellent kids that give us everything that we can ask for. They have put the work in during the off-season and I’m excited to see them get their rewards.
