Daily Sports Digest: Mamaroneck’s Newman Brings Home Gold

The Top Spot:

To his students at New Rochelle High School, math teacher Steve Newman of Mamaroneck may not be anything more then an expert on the Pythagorean Theorem or a master of SAT Prep, but what the students do not know is that Mr. Newman is also an elite athlete.

At 50-years-old Newman earned himself a national sponsorship from PowerBar and recently competed in the YMCA Masters National Championship in Fort Lauderdale Florida from April 12-15. He finished first in the 200 backstroke and second in the 100 backstroke, 200 mixed medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Newman also came home with two third place and two fifth place finishes in the meet. Needless to say, he was delighted with his performance.

“I am very pleased with my swims this past weekend,” said Newman, continuing, “My training over the last six months has been difficult at times, but the group of people I swim with have been very supportive."

Newman has been swimming competitively his entire life, but after college he took 15 years off and didn’t return to the pool until 2000. In his life he has been ranked as one of the countries top ten swimmers 66 times, and he has made the world’s top ten 12 times.

The New Rochelle math teacher will be competing in a few local and regional meets in the upcoming months but the big date he has circled is the Pan American Masters Games in June 2013. The event is expected to bring swimmers from many countries to Sarasota, Florida for the championship.

Game: Mamaroneck vs. White Plains

Score: Mamaroneck won 6-2

Highlights: Mike Williams had another solid outing as he improves to 3-0 for the Tigers on the season; in the complete game Williams stuck out eight.

Sport: Girls Lacrosse

Game: Pelham vs. Mamaroneck

Score: Mamaroneck won 16-6

Highlights: Mamaroneck’s 13 first half goals doomed the Pelicans from the beginning. Abby Baigelman led the Tigers with six goals and two assist as Jessica Gardiner and Jessica Corbin each scored three in the win.  Isabel Laterzo scored three goals and assisted on another in the loss.

Sport: Softball

Game: Scarsdale vs. Mamaroneck

Score: Scarsdale won 10-2

Highlights: Taylor Yu pitched beautifully in her seven innings of work as she only allowed two hits and struck out five in the win. Scarsdale’s Dana Goldstein, Libby Gross and Malorie Ruggeri each scored twice for the Raiders. Jen Gottifried and Melissa Marks each scored for Mamaroneck in the loss.

Sport: Baseball

Game: Rye Neck vs. Westlake

Score: Westlake won 6-3

Highlights: James Grieco went 1-3 with an RBI and a run in the win. Rye Neck’s Chris Cascione was 2-2 with two runs scored in the loss.

Sport: Boys Tennis

Game: Briarcliff vs. Rye Neck

Score: Briarcliff won 4-2

Sport: Golf

Game: Mamaroneck vs. Scarsdale

Score: Scarsdale won 209-231

Highlights: Scarsdale’s James Nicholas finished first overall with a 38 on the Par 36 Winged Foot West course. Robert Riemer led Mamaroneck with a 41 as the Tigers fall to 4-4 on the year. Scarsdale now stands at 6-0.

Today’s Schedule:

In boys lacrosse, New Rochelle heads to Mamaroneck at 4:30 p.m.

In boys tennis, Scarsdale B will take on Mamaroneck at at 4:15 p.m.

NYSSWA Announces Girls All-State Team:

The NYSSWA announced the All-State Teams for girls basketball earlier in the week. Each class has several teams, a Player of the Year and a Coach of the Year.

Class AA’s Player of the Year Breanna Steweart of Cicero-North Syracuse narrowly beat out Ossining’s junior Saniya Chong for the top award.

Pearl River’s took home the Player of the Year award in Class A and Irvington’s Lexi Martins was named the top player in Class B. Irvington Head Coach Gina Maher was also named the Coach of the Year.

Class C’s Player of the Year went to Greenwich’s Dani DeGregory and McKenzie Bezon of Elba won the award in Class D.
