MHS Fencers Look Sharp Against Arlington High, Contributed by Patricia Roberts.

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Fencing Team hosted Arlington High School from Lagrangeville.  Coached by Dr. Calvert Schlick and JV assistant George Reed, the boys and girls epee and foil teams outshone their opponents 10-8 respectively.  MHS fencers Stephane Moise and Julien Dieck went undefeated, winning 3 out of 3 in their bouts.  The MHS girls team was represented brilliantly by Rebecca Harmon and Serena Cattau who also went undefeated 3 out of 3 in their bouts.   On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the MHS team will travel to Clarkstown for a meet which will see the return of the MHS saber team.  The next home meets are Tuesday, Feb. 7 against Hackley and Thursday, Feb. 9 against Nyack.

Daniels helps Huskies to championship

Justin Daniels of Suffern, a junior forward, has helped the Northeastern University men’s hockey team build the third longest unbeaten streak in team history.

Daniels, who is perhaps the team’s best face-off specialist, has six goals and five assists to compile 11 points for the Huskies, who are 7-0-1 since Nov. 18 and are coming off a championship showing at the Mariucci Classic Hockey Tournament in Minneapolis, MN.

Northeastern, making its third trip to the Mariucci Classic, which it won in 1997 with a 4-2 victory over Minnesota, tied Princeton in the tournament’s first semifinal bout, 3-3, but eventually reached the finals after Daniels ended the shootout in the eighth round.

In the title game,  Northeastern topped No. 2 Minnesota, 3-2, avenging a 3-2 defeat in overtime in the championship game a few years ago.

The Huskies went 8-0-1 from Dec. 4, 1985 to Jan. 11, 1986 as the program’s second-longest run. The Northeastern standard is 12 games (12-0-0) as the Huskies won their first 12 outings of the 1980-81 campaign under then-coach Ferny Flaman.

Hockey East play resumes at Matthews Arena on Jan. 13 when Northeastern, led by HE goaltender of the month Chris Rawlings of North Delta, B.C.,  collides with archrival Boston University for the first time this season. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the New England Sports Network (NESN). Following the BU game, the Huskies will skate next door to play Boston College at Fenway Park on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.

Daniels plays on the team, but not on the same line, with twin brother Drew Daniels, also a junior forward.

Mortarboard musings

Senior Michelle Eberhart of New City is a member of the track and field team at Binghamton University, which is prepping for the Cornell Upstate Challenge at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. Michelle, the daughter of Mark and Diane Eberhart, was an all-county choice at Clarkstown South. She finished seventh in the triple jump (37-5) at the America East Outdoor Championships as a sophomore, and last year was named to the America East Academic Honor Roll.

Defenseman James McManus of Pearl River and the Maritime College hockey team return to action on Jan. 14 after nearly a month layoff for the holiday break. The Privateers (9-6-1) meet County College of Morris (8-6), of Randolph, NJ, at the Parkwood Ice Rink in Great Neck, NY. The first puck is set to drop at 9:15 p.m. Maritime meets New Jersey Institute of Technology (8-7) on Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. at World Ice Arena in Flushing Meadows.

Freshman gymnast Donna Straub of Congers is expected to make an impact in the all-around competition at Towson University. Straub, a Clarkstown North graduate and a club member at Galaxy Gymnastics in Orangeburg, might make her collegiate debut when the Tigers open their season on Jan. 15 at Ursinus in Collegeville, PA, along with West Chester and Wilson College. Towson is the six-time defending champion in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Abigail Winsted of Yorktown Heights, a freshman diver out of Yorktown HS, and junior Joanna Tchobanova of Brewster, who competes in the freestyle and IM, return to action on Jan. 21 when the swimming team at Roger Williams University (2-4) welcomes the University of New England to Briston, RI, for a meet at 1 p.m.

Freshman guard Andrea Moschetta of Harrison and sophomore forward Tamara Tribble of White Plains are breaking into the lineup on the women’s basketball team at Springfield (MA) College. Moschetta has appeared in three games while Tribble has five steals and 44 rebounds in 13 games for the Pride (8-6), who visit MIT (7-6) in Cambridge, MA, on Saturday (Jan. 14) at 2 p.m. Springfield is coming of a 69-46 victory over Coast Guard Academy, which fell to 5-6. The Pride featured a balanced attack in which 12 players scored, including post player Tribble, who had six points in 14 minutes. Moschetta had two points in 11 minutes. Springfield stays at home on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to host Mount Holyoke College (2-11) of South Hadley, MA, at 7 p.m.

Highlights: David Stewart led the Huguenots with wins in the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. Mamaroneck was led by Benjamin Geithner and Zhao Xu who each finished first twice.

Sport: Girls Basketball

Game: Valhalla vs. Rye Neck

Score: Valhalla Won 30-29

Highlights: Valhalla squeaked out a road win thanks in large part to Jade Fumarelli’s 10 points. Paige O’Donnell led Rye Neck with 10 in the loss.

In Boys Basketball, Mamaroneck will host a four team tournament tonight with games starting at 5 and 7 p.m.

In Girls Basketball, Mamaroneck will head to Rye Neck at 4:15 p.m.
