Hirsch Leads Scarsdale to 2-0 win over Rye Neck

Senior Henry Hirsch throws a complete game shutout for Scarsdale.

It didn't matter that yesterday was the hottest day of the year. There was nothing hotter than Scarsdale's starting pitcher, senior Henry Hirsch, in Wednesday's baseball game against Rye Neck.

Hirsch outdueled Rye Neck star Ryan Pennell by throwing a complete game, and allowing only one hit and walking three. He picked up his first win of the season in Scarsdale's 2-0 victory. Hirsch also had 13 strikeouts.

"I was very impressed with what Hirsch did today out there," coach Doc Scholl said. "We won with small ball and it was a great team win."

Hirsch, nicknamed "bullet" by his Head Coach Doc Scholl, was not worried about Pennell and was up for the challenge.

"I wasn't really thinking about pitching against him," Hirsch said. "I was more worried about doing what had to be done for us to win the game and I was able to hold my own."

Scarsdale scored its first run on a throwing error by Pennell that allowed Anthony Cugini to come home. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Hirsch drew a two-out walk. Austin Kneif followed with a single and then Ethan Shenberg delivered an RBI single driving in Hirsch.

On the mound, Hirsch's best sequence was the top of the fourth, when he escaped unscathed after putting runners on second and third with no outs. He struck out the side to get out of the inning.

Most of Hirsch's success came with his fastball. Rye Neck hitters were swinging hard but were unable to catch up to Hirsch's heater

Pennell gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and five walks. He struggled with his control for most of the day but battled to keep his team in the game.

This win pushed Scarsdale to 2-0 on the season.
