Mamaroneck Crushes White Plains 18-4 in Baseball

Mamaroneck makes a statement in a battle between two of the section's best teams.

WHITE PLAINS – The Mamaroneck Tigers' bats got a cracking early and often Saturday against the White Plains Tigers.

Mamaroneck went off in the second inning as they put up eight runs to overtake White Plains en route to a dominating 18-4 victory in yesterday's Class AA matchup at White Plains High School.

White Plains went up 3-1 in the first inning after a Connor Davis three-run homer, but Mamaroneck quickly answered back. It was the combination of juniors Dean Chiapparelli and Scott Hagan who powered the rally with their deep drives.

Chiapparelli's first home run of the game -- which was the go ahead run -- came in the second inning with two strikes and one out. Chiapparelli zoned in on the pitch, got one he liked and that was the beginning of Mamaroneck's massive rally.

"I was really just trying to put the ball in play and I made good contact and fortunately hit the ball over the fence," said Chiapparelli, who went 2 for 2, with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. "It was a clutch spot in the game against a rival team so I was very happy to come through for my team and it was a great win for us."

Hagan came up later in the second with the bases loaded and one out, and delivered his first of two homers for the game. Hagan hit a towering grand slam shot above and beyond the head of the White Plains outfielders and from that point on Mamaroneck would continue to generate offense and create separation.

"I was looking to jump on fast balls and high pitches and I got on a few today," said Hagan, who finished the game 3 for 4 with two homers, six RBI and two runs scored. "This win should let the section know that we're still a force to be reckoned with despite some of the players we lost last year."

Mamaroneck scored at least one run in each inning and kept White Plains scoreless from the third inning on thanks to strong relief pitching. Sam Wallach came in and threw three scoreless innings for the win. White Plains continued fighting and was able to put runners in scoring position but they weren't able to capitalize on their opportunities.

"This game was huge for both teams, being that both of us are two of the top teams in the section," Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli said. "They got up on us early with the big home run and then our guys came back with some timely hitting. Wallach also did a good job in relief. His knuckleball was awesome today."
