Mamaroneck's Win over New Rochelle Highlight of Tennis Season Thus Far

Mamaroneck's Rob Mullman won the decisive match.

The outcome of the Mamaroneck-New Rochelle tennis match on April 14 went down to No. 1 singles, and Rob Mullman of the Tigers was facing a higher-ranked opponent. Yet it was Mullman who came away with a dramatic third-set victory just before 8 p.m.

"Through guts and determination and focus and stamina he pulled it out in a tiebreaker," coach Tim Hooker said. "It's a testament to this kid's determination to try no matter what, and that's nice to see."

Mamaroneck's 4-3 win over New Rochelle has been the highlight of the first half of the season, which the Tigers just completed with a 7-1 record.

Hooker said that Mullman's work ethic has influenced the entire team.

"He fights 'til the bitter end and has tremendous focus and commitment to the team and the event, and that spirit goes down through the whole team," Hooker said.

The Tigers have also shown great chemistry through the season. While tennis is often an individual sport, the Tigers support each other. When Hooker makes the rounds, it's common for the players on Court 7 to ask about the action on Court 2.

"Everyone will stick around after their matches and cheer for each other, Hooker said. "Everybody wants to know how we're doing."

Playing second singles is Alex Kupferman, a junior who is smooth and graceful on the court. The Tigers also have good chemistry in doubles with freshmen Dan Baigel and Ryan Cadden at No. 2, and Ethan Bernstein and Evan Dixon at No. 3, a pair who move and communicate well together.

The team is relatively injury-free and ready for a tough second-half that will determine the league title. The stretch starts this week with four matches in five days, including back-to-back contests against Bronxville and Scarsdale today and on Tuesday.

They will take their lead from Mullman, who was a serious player growing up but now focuses more on football and plays tennis as a hobby. Clearly his demeanor transfers to both sports.

"I haven't seen somebody with such focus and determination no matter what the obstacle," Hooker said. "He doesn't let up."
