More Butterflies Mean Healthier Yards: Audubon President
The library has an exhibit featuring books and guidelines about creating gardens that ensure the well-being of people, plants and wildlife.

LARCHMONT, NY — Sandy Morrissey, president of Bronx River-Sound Shore Audubon, will speak on how to raise monarch butterflies at the Larchmont Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27. Both children and adults will appreciate Morrissey's storytelling as she describes the miraculous journey of the monarchs to Mexico, the challenges these pollinators face and the ways in which we can help them thrive.
The monarch butterfly population has declined due to pesticides, herbicides and loss of native habitat. Morrissey is an avid gardener who will share tips for growing a garden with milkweed that attracts monarchs and provides essential nutrition for metamorphosis. Books on the topic as well as milkweed seeds or plants will be available at the event.
As co-sponsors of this event, the Larchmont Library and the Larchmont Mamaroneck Healthy Yards Project have created a reading room exhibit featuring books and guidelines about creating gardens that ensure the well-being of people, plants and wildlife. The newly formed, volunteer Larchmont Mamaroneck Healthy Yards Project is a collaboration of the Town of Mamaroneck Sustainability Collaborative, Village of Larchmont Environmental Committee and the Village of Mamaroneck Committee for the Environment. It is dedicated to helping residents maintain safe, appealing and sustainable lawns and gardens without the use of pesticides and herbicides, according to a spokesperson.
