'One Year After Ida' Larchmont/Mamaroneck Summits Planned

Attendees will be able to learn more about flood mitigation, state funding for those affected by Ida & how to prepare for future disasters.

LARCHMONT/MAMARONECK, NY — For many of those who lived through the devastation of Ida, the disaster is in the review mirror, while others are still struggling to recover — but the threat of the next flood remains for all of us.

The Sound shore towns and villages most affected by the flooding in the wake of Ida are marking a year since the disaster to bring the community together to tap new resources available for recovering from the losses, discuss what leaders are doing to help mitigate future flooding and give property owners the tools and information to protect themselves ahead of the inevitable next storm.

On Tuesday, September 13, at 8 a.m., the Larchmont Mamaroneck Local Summit will be hosting "One Year After Ida: How We Prepare for the Future and Learn from the Past." Municipal administrators will discuss how the three municipalities can prepare for and anticipate future emergencies and what residents need to know and can do in advance. Panelists include:

On Wednesday, September 14, the Village of Mamaroneck will be hosting a "One Year After Hurricane Ida Community Meeeting," at 7 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Mamaroneck Avenue School, located at 850 Mamaroneck Ave.

Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy will moderate a discussion that will include:

  • a presentation by Village Manager Jerry Barberio about the initiatives the village has taken over the past year to mitigate flooding.
  • an announcement from the Governor's Office of Storm Recovery about new funding available for homeowners and renters recovering from Ida.
  • steps residents can take before the next natural disaster.

The Community Resource Center and other community organizations operating under the Coalition for Community will provide resources and print materials.

The Mamaroneck School District will provide wireless translation equipment for simultaneous translation for Spanish-speaking members of the community.

The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required for this event, which is a change from what was initially communicated. However, seating will be first come, first serve.

In order to start the meeting on time, attendees are requested to be standing in line at the Gertrude Ave. Entrance #2 of the Mamaroneck Ave. School by 6:30 p.m. Everyone will need to clear security before entering the building and making their way to the All Purpose Room.

The parking lot at the corner of Gertrude Ave. and Ralph Ave. is free and available to all attendees However, since parking is limited, carpooling, walking or bicycling are encouraged.
