Three Mamaroneck Tigers Victorious Depsite Loss

They suffer defeat in first wrestling match after winter break.

It was one of those days for the Mamaroneck High School wrestling team, losing 60-15 to the Sleepy Hollow Horsemen last night at the high school's Palmer gym.

"We didn't do a great job tonight," said Tigers head coach Anthony Vitti about his team's overall performance of only three victories in their first match after the winter break.

Sleepy Hollow quickly jumped out to a 37-0 lead before Mamaroneck tallied three points en route to their 15 for the match.

Tiger Bobby Autera helped break the scoring drought with a 2-0 decision in the 112 weight class against Sleepy Hollow's Edwin Jimenez.

"It was a great win," said Autera.

John White won by pin in the 125-pound weight class over Sleepy Hollow's Edwin Lebron, while Andres Pedraza pinned Gabe Palacios in the 152 class.

Paul Curtin, who lost his match in the 215 weight class, faced a strong opponent. "He was a tough kid and wanted it more than me," he said.

Julio Alvarado is optimistic about his intentions to improve the next match. "I think that I could have done better, but I tried my hardest and I'll try harder next time," he said.

The Tigers will compete again today in a triple meet against Rye and Harrison at Harrison High School.

Top record holders so far for the Tigers include: White with 17 wins; Pedraza with 16; Autera with 15-16; and Jake Mills, who is out recovering from a concussion sustained three days ago, with 14-15 wins.

"He'll be back," Vitti said. "We want him to do well. He'll solidify our lineup."
