I woke up and was shivering. What's going on?! My nose was cold, my toes were cold, and I had the strangest feeling that my husband must have opened a window during the night. Grabbing my hooded sweatshirt, I started walking towards the arctic cold that somehow had invaded Long Island ..overnight! I was right..the spare bedroom window was opened. Closing it quickly, I must have murmured something like.."It's chilly today!" My husband heard me from the bedroom and replied.."A little fresh air never hurt anyone!" I was too cold to debate this. I put on my sweatshirt and headed towards the thermostat. "Are you making coffee?" he asked. "Sure," I replied, "as soon as my hands thaw out." I looked at the thermostat and it read 62 degrees. Now, I know what you're thinking..62 degrees would make for a lovely Spring day, however, for INSIDE the house..it was too darn cold. I raised it, setting it to 68. It immediately clicked "ON". From upstairs, I heard him ask, "Did you turn on the heat?!" He wasn't happy. I could tell. "No, dear. That warm air escaping from the vents, is from the fire I started by rubbing two sticks together." He was not amused. "You know..there is something wrong with you! Do you know that it is MAY 25th?!" I didn't quite understand his question. Was he serious? Who cares what date the calendar reads? Cold is cold. He came into the kitchen wearing his jeans and a white tee shirt..obviously trying to prove his point. He looked at me. I was sitting at the kitchen table, wearing my hooded sweatshirt, a pair of woolen sox, my gloves and a scarf. I wasn't trying to be funny. I was merely trying to warm up. "You're sick. You need to see a doctor." He made his own coffee that morning and for the rest of the day, we played "Thermostat Tag." Hope you are familiar with the rules. You raise the temperature to about 70, when he is not looking (preferrably when he is out of the house) and when you turn your back, he lowers it to 60. If I could make a wager, I bet my husband was a landlord in his previous life! Turns on the heat on October 15th and turns it off on April 15th. Peace.
