Hi All! This week I read The Lake Shore Limited by Sue Miller. Wow! What a writer! I have never read anything by Miller before, and I have to tell you, I was blown away. She delves into her characters’ thoughts in such a way that I found myself saying often, “I have had that very thought myself.” I also loved the way she brought out nuances in scenes that most authors don’t think of illuminating. Her writing reminded me of some of the qualities I’ve always enjoyed about John Updike’s writing. Lake Shore Limited has some sad aspects to it, as many fine works of literature do. I highly recommend Sue Miller and I certainly intend to read more of her books.
Maeve Binchy has a new book out called Minding Frankie. I have not read it yet but am looking forward to it! She is a wonderful storyteller. If you have avoided Maeve Binchy as I did for a number of years, because the covers look so “romancy,” give her a try. You are in for a treat. My personal favorite is The Copper Beech.

I see that although our 3 copies of Minding Frankie are out right now, the audiobook is in. Do you know about the free downloadable audiobooks and e-books available through your library’s website? Go to your library’s website (ours is islandtreespubliclibrary.org and Levittown’s is nassaulibrary.org/levtown). Click on the DOWNLOAD AUDIOBOOKS & E-BOOKS icon. That will bring you to the Nassau Digital Doorway site. If you have never used this site before, click on the Guided Tour icon which will show you the steps for using the site. Items are downloaded first onto your computer and then can be transferred to a mobile device. If it’s a new book, you may have to get on a waiting list, the same as you would for a hard copy bestseller. If you want something to read or listen to right away, it is a great way to catch up with older books you might have missed. Now that the summer is coming, people who travel are really going to enjoy these e-books and audiobooks.
