We are about to enter those months that substantiate an academic year.  Introductory protocols have been established, rules set, students introduced to subject fundamentals.  It will be these next days that make a school year so eventful.

I always enjoyed this time.  This will be my second year in retirement following over 48 spent in public education.  A teaching career, at whatever level, carries with it a host of pleasures and memories.  There are certainly challenges, difficulties, but they are outweighed by the opportunity to promote intellectual curiosity.  Young minds want to grow, develop.  A successful teacher shows the way, shares the experience.

Unfortunately success can prove a nebulous term.  The academic journey is as much an exploration of self as it is an application of mental acumen and skill.  Education is often a personal achievement emphasizing commitment and effort.  Attainment brings with it the ability to compete and achieve in a demanding world.

The American system of education has come under recent criticism.  Comparative statistics seem to indicate a need for improvement in basic skills and subject material.  There is an increasing effort to quantify intellectual growth.  Test scores, competitive recitation have value.  However they are not the sole arbiters of academic sucess.  The comprehensive learning experience involves multiple approaches and techniques.  All revolve around the basic teacher/student relationship.  Socratic echange and interaction lie at the core of any curricular philosophy.

So students the door is open.  Welcome the coming year. Experience everything that each day has to offer.  Above all dream.  Life isn't a set piece.  It's a jazz riff.  Enjoy the adventure.
