[PHOTOS] Family Holds Memorial For Local Amityville Nurse
The community came together to honor Gresmor Blackman-Douglas, who died in a car crash while on her way to work on May 3.

AMITYIVLLE, NY — The local community came together this past weekend to celebrate the life of a beloved nurse who recently died in a crash while on her way to work. Amityville resident Gresmor Blackman-Douglas, who goes by Jesma, worked as a nurse at the ICU unit at Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park in Brooklyn. The 58-year-old tragically died in car crash on the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead on May 3.
Blackman-Douglas had a tremendous impact on the community, earning a posthumous Heroism Award from the Town of Babylon for her commitment to helping others. On Saturday, her family planned a drive-by memorial will take place at the church she frequently often on 76 Parkway Avenue in Amityville. Many attended the event, including Town of Babylon Councilmen DuWayne Gregory and Terry McSweeney.
"She was a tremendous person," Gregory said during the memorial.

Then on Sunday, the family of Blackman-Douglas hosted a service will be live streamed via the Slinger-Hasgill Funeral Home in Amityville. Guests were able to stream the service via Zoom. Guests were also encouraged to wear blue during the events.
Her son, Leston Douglas gave thanks to everyone who supported them following the death of Blackman-Douglas including local family Carl Stephens and Linda Pieve from Gods kitchen who has been cooking for the family. They also showed their appreciation for Marcus Duffin who reached out to Supervisor Rich Schaffer to share Blackman-Douglas' story.
