WEATHER UPDATE: 'Significant Black Ice' to Impact Tuesday Morning Commute, LIRR Delays Likely
Winter weather advisory extended until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The snow has moved on, but the National Weather Service has extended a winter weather advisory for Long Island until 9 a.m. Tuesday due to ice on the roadways.
“Significant black ice will cause travel difficulties,” the NWS said. “Be prepared for slippery roads and use caution while driving.”
Long Island got hit with several inches of snow overnight Sunday before the snow turned to rain and freezing rain Monday morning. By Monday afternoon, the precipitation had turned back to snow–heavy at times–and dumped several more inches across the region. Some unofficial NWS snowfall total reports– East Northport: 10 inches, Bayville: 7.9 inches, Smithtown: 7.5 inches, Levittown: 6.8 inches. SEE MORE: Latest Long Island Snowfall Totals

The temperature will fall into the teens across the island Monday night, freezing up any standing water on the roadways. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph will sink wind chill temperatures to as low as 10 below zero. Scattered power outages are also possible from falling tree limbs, the NWS says.

The Long Island Rail Road experienced delays and cancellations throughout Monday afternoon and evening due to icing conditions on rails and switches.

“We’re working to clear switches and are operating work trains that apply antifreeze to the rail and patrol trains with scraper shoes to reduce icing,” the LIRR said on its website.
The LIRR will run on a regular weekday schedule on Tuesday.
“However, in the wake of the winter storm and sub-freezing temperatures, customers should anticipate delays and some canceled trains in the morning rush hour,” the railroad said.

Tuesday is expected to be sunny with a high near 24. Wind chills, however, will make it feel like zero to 10 degrees, the NWS says.
