3.1 Magnitude Earthquake Felt On Long Island

The earthquake originated in New Jersey, but was felt all over Long Island, according to reports. Did you feel it?

LONG ISLAND, NY — Many Long Islanders reported feeling tremors from an earthquake in New Jersey early Wednesday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 3.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded about a mile south of Freehold, New Jersey, at 2 a.m. Tremors were reported as far north as Poughkeepsie and Hartford, Connecticut, and as far south as Durham, North Carolina.

The USGS website recorded more than 6,000 people who said they felt the earthquake, including people on Long Island. The USGS created a map (below) of where the tremors were felt. Blue indicates the tremors were felt, but they were likely weak.
