Being Thankful, From Wings—to Whales

We love spring when robins arrive and blossoms burst. What can compare? Maybe autumn?

We give thanks in November for so much in our lives. We gather around the Thanksgiving table, speaking of our blessings.

But as I walk our Long Beach shore these days, I see us blessed with the bounty that spreads across our table of sea and sand. Like spring, autumn life, too, bursts forth.

Starlings swoop over our boardwalk; gulls dive over baitfish schools. Then stripers abound, which brings loads of fishermen around.

The striped bass chase the baitfish to the surface, the gulls dive to the baitfish roil, and the surf fisherman cast amidst it all.

I was on the boards and beach recently, capturing this rush of fall: The fishing boats, the shore anglers, the massive flocks of gulls.

But not far behind, chasing the same baitfish—are the whales of autumn.

One can’t not love the magnificent whales. No matter what troubles us these days, the whales brighten our lives in so many ways.

In previous essays, I was lucky to have captured the whales so close to our shore. This time, I was luckier still.

Be well,
