How We Kill Whales

Are the whales dying from wind farm construction? No—definitely not.

Many of you are vehemently opposed to offshore windmills. I understand that. I, too, would like Long Beach’s shore and horizon to be as pristine as the days American Indians fished our shores.

But the centuries tumble on like the waves that crash upon our sand.

We’ve had a lot of whale deaths lately; that fact saddens nobody more than me.

Most whale deaths are caused by collisions with ships, boats, and their props. Fishing gear and nettings are also responsible for untimely whale deaths. But whales, too, as all cetaceans, are subject to illness and subsequent death, as are we.

But many of us, to keep our horizons sleek and neat, try to use whale deaths as a deterrent to offshore wind turbines.

That scenario easily misleads people. If those opposers to offshore wind want to debate the aesthetics of our sea’s horizon, that’s a legitimate point. Let’s do that.

But please—stop the lying!
