Meeting Scheduled For Phase 2 Of Long Beach's Army Corps Project

The public will get a chance to hear details of the plan and give its input at one of two public meetings this month.

The US Army Corps of Engineers will be holding two public meetings on the Barrier Island this month to inform the public about the upcoming Phase 2 of the beach restoration project, and to also get input.

The first meeting will be held on April 18 at 7 p.m. at Long Beach City Hall, located at 1 West Chester Street. The second meeting will be on April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Bishop Molloy Center at 15 Parkside Road Drive in Point Lookout. Both meetings are sponsored by the Army Corps, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and local politicians.

In March, the Army Corps completed work on the first phase of the project: constructing new jetties along the Long Beach coast. The second phase of the project will involve extending the beach itself, constructing large dunes to help block high waters and constructing paths for beachgoers to get over the dunes.

Work on the second phase is not expected to start until after this summer, so residents and guests won't have to worry about the beach closings that happened last year during construction.

For more information on the meetings, residents can contact the office of Sen. Todd Kaminksy at (516) 766-8383, or email kaminsky@nysenate.gov.
